A Debate Over the Future of Uranium in Nebraska

From a distance, Nebraska’s only uranium mine looks a lot like a cemetery.

White barrels and black boxes cover the wellheads of the 5,000 wells that pump water 500 to 800 feet underground so that uranium can be dissolved and pumped back to the surface.

The well covers that dot the hillsides below historic Crow Butte give the appearance of widely spaced tombstones.

That’s either unfortunate or prophetic, depending on which side of the debate you stand on the future of the mine — and the nuclear power plants fueled by uranium.

Interest in nuclear power and uranium mining is rising as the nation looks for cleaner,

Powertech acquires land in Wyoming, South Dakota

Powertech Uranium Corp., which is pursuing a permit to mine for uranium on about 5,700 acres in western Weld County, announced it has acquired additional mining claims and leases in Wyoming and South Dakota.

The company purchased 381 mining claims and 8,186 acres of Wyoming state mining leases for a total of 15,806 acres. The land package was purchased from Bayswater Uranium Corp. for $50,000.

“The acquisition of the Bayswater properties complements the strong land positions that Powertech has compiled in South Dakota and Wyoming,” said Richard Clement, Powertech president and CEO. “Powertech is the most active player in the Dewey Burdock, Dewey Terrace and Aladdin (prospecting) areas. The company has focused on this historic uranium exploration/mining district along the flank of the Black Hills Uplift in South Dakota and Wyoming.”

Mining profits set to dive next year

Global mining companies’ profits may plunge 60% next year because raw-materials prices will be under pressure for at least six more months, according to UBS.

Prices for bulk materials such as coal and iron ore may drop 40% compared with this year, while most commodities may fall from current spot prices, London-based UBS analysts Daniel Brebner and James Luke said today in a note to clients.

Demand for commodities ”has deteriorated at an unprecedented rate,” the analysts said. Planned production cuts won’t go far enough to bolster prices, Luke said in a telephone interview. The analysts said government spending to boost demand may ignite inflation, leading to an earnings surprise by the second half of next year.

Uranium Energy Corp Completes Filing of Final Permit Applications for the Goliad ISR Project in South Texas

Uranium Energy Corp is pleased to announce that the Company has filed all permit applications for In-Situ Recovery of uranium at the Company’s flagship Goliad Project in South Texas. On December 1, Uranium Energy filed a Radioactive Material License Application (RMLA) and a Permit by Rule Application (PBRA) with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the final two applications that needed to be filed.
Because uranium recovery projects require a number of authorizations, a recap of Uranium Energy’s permit applications and the status of each follows:
– Mine Permit – The draft mine permit was issued by TCEQ in June 2008, and is subject to further consideration by TCEQ. Approval of the other permits is needed before recovery operations can be initiated.
– Production Area Authorization (PA-1) – The application was filed with TCEQ in September 2008, and is undergoing technical review.

Virginia Beach weighs in against uranium mining

Opponents of uranium mining in Pittsylvania County are poised to pick up a potentially influential ally: the city of Virginia Beach.
Virginia Beach City Council is slated to consider an official resolution next month that would put the beachfront resort of 436,000, Virginia’s largest city, on record against the proposed Coles Hill uranium mine outside of Chatham. Several Council members spoke out last Tuesday against the project, expressing concerns that a natural disaster could poison the watershed that feeds the city’s water supply.
In 1997 Virginia Beach began pumping water from the Lake Gaston pipeline, which taps the Roanoke River watershed of which Pittsylvania County is a part.
Virginia Beach Director of Public Utilities Thomas Leahy warned that under a worst-case scenario, a hurricane or tropical storm could destroy the lining beds that would contain radioactive mining wastes, unleashing toxins and heavy metals into tributaries that flow into Lake Gaston.

Russia uranium miner plans $7.4 bln expansion

Russia’s state uranium miner plans to invest 203.6 billion roubles ($7.4 billion) by 2015 to fund a massive expansion plan as demand from the nuclear power sector grows, the company’s general director said on Wednesday.
Atomredmetzoloto (ARMZ) General Director Vadim Zhivov told Reuters the company, which produces uranium in Russia and Kazakhstan, planned to increase output of the metal to 4,300 tonnes next year from 3,880 tonnes expected in 2008. Zhivov said in an interview the financial crisis had not affected his company’s spending plans so far, despite the fact 172.3 billion roubles ($6.3 billion) of the planned investment would not be funded from the Russian state budget.
“In the next two years, we can finance this through our own means,” said Zhivov.
Russia holds more than 10 percent of the world’s uranium reserves and is positioning itself as a major player in meeting growing demand from the fast-growing nuclear industry.
Zhivov said ARMZ, the mining arm of Russian state atomic agency Rosatom,
