Over 2 Billion Tons Of Iron Ore Accessible For Mining in Sierra Leone

It was in 2004 that mining exploration commenced in Bumbuna Township in the Tonkolili district by the African Minerals Company, formerly the Sierra Leone Diamond Company (SLDC). With huge funds running into billion dollars poured into the operation. Road construction to the exploration sites since 2004/8 has chopped close to Three Hundred Million Dollars with more road construction envisaged. Equipment and dumper vehicles that were used to carry the exercise, which are no more useful could be pegged around One Hundred Million Dollars.

The operation is very high capital intensive and requires regular financial input. Monies spent from 2004/8 are running into billions of dollars, all in an effort to realize the dream and put Sierra Leone on the map as a country viable and economically profitable to do business. The brain behind the venture is Romanian born Frank Timis, a 46-year-old business risk taker. The Tonkolili district will soon become the labour pool of the country, where a large portion of the unemployed youth would turn their attention to in search of jobs.

Frank Timis faces court over African mines

FRANK TIMIS is no stranger to controversy. Only three years ago he sparked City outrage over the near-collapse of Regal Petroleum. Now the Romanian, who has a number of drug offences behind him, is on the cusp of a legal battle in Sierra Leone over a $45m (£26m) cash and shares deal he announced to the stock exchange last week.

A UK-registered mining minnow fears Timis may have sold exploration rights that did not belong to African Minerals, the AIM-listed miner he controls.

Late last week London Mining filed a writ in a court in Sierra Leone seeking an injunction that would force Timis, 44, to move his workforce from two stretches of disputed land.

Sierra Gold Corporation Announces Shipping of Gold Processing Plants and River Dredge to Sierra Leone

Sierra Gold Corporation (Pink Sheets:SGCP) announced today that the two 10 ton, state-of- the-art, gold processing plants are scheduled to be shipped from Texas in less than 2 weeks and are due to arrive in Sierra Leone on October 1st. The new portable plants will be available to process gold for the fall mining season. These plants are ideally suited for placer/alluvial, hard rock and sand/gravel operations. They are very cost effective and boast a 95-98% recovery rate. The company will now have the capability to process up to 20 tons per hour, which will considerably speed up gold production. Additionally, this technology offers an environmentally friendly process with no chemicals and reduced water use.

Sierra Gold also announced today that the recently purchased Air-Lift river dredge will be transported to its Sewa river property next week. Logistical and set-up operations will be soon underway. The company will start test operations on site toward the end of this month. The dredge will now allow the company to extract gold from the gravels at the bottom of the river and to continue to produce gold throughout the rainy season.

BOS to Provide Extensive 3-D Seismic Surveys Offshore Guinea as Hyperdynamics Moves Toward Drilling for a World Class Discovery

Hyperdynamics Corporation (AMEX:HDY) announced that a new seismic services contract with Bergen Oilfield Services (BOS), out of Bergen, Norway was signed last Thursday, July 3, 2008. Over the last couple of months the two companies have been in negotiation regarding the details surrounding this extensive 3-D seismic program. This 3-D program, to begin in Q4 2008, is the next and most important step in preparation for drilling exploration wells offshore The Republic of Guinea, West Africa. While negotiating this program, the Company has also been working to line up drilling slots for drilling exploration wells as early as the fourth quarter of 2009. As such, management remains in contact and is now increasing efforts with drilling consortiums, drilling contractors, and potential Joint Venture Partners. The Company hopes to soon have more specific information on its drilling plans.

The 3-D surveys this year are to cover up to 5,000 square kilometers of various grids within its 31,000 square mile concession that have been specified by the Company’s geosciences team and have many substantial targets.
