Led off by Montana Rep. Denny Rehberg, a quartet of Republicans this week used a nationally broadcast congressional debate to push an energy bill that includes drilling for more oil in Alaska and domestic offshore sites. “We can do it all: traditional fossil fuels, oil, gas, coal, renewable energy, conservation and efficiency,” Rehberg said at the Monday debate in New Orleans. “Americans are demanding solutions.”
Yet their Democratic counterparts said Republicans are the ones standing in the way of a progressive energy policy by insisting any energy bill include lifting bans on oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and sensitive offshore sites.
“When push comes to shove, the Republicans have not stepped up to the plate to reverse our dependence on foreign oil,” said Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash. “It has been:

Opponents of a plan to drill for natural gas beneath a wilderness area known as the Mason Tract are celebrating a federal judge’s decision to block mineral exploration there.
A judge determined federal officials failed to perform adequate environmental assessments prior to granting approval to drill.
“Absent of going back and doing the full environmental impact statement or appealing, it’s dead,” said Marvin Roberson of the Michigan Sierra Club, a plaintiff in a lawsuit against the federal government to halt the drilling.
Savoy Exploration of Traverse City for years wanted to slant drill a new well beneath the sprawling, scenic Mason Tract from a nearby spot on federal forestland. A pipeline and production facility would be installed if gas is found.

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (NYSE: CLF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) today announced that its Board of Directors has approved a capital project at its Empire and Tilden mines in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The project, which requires approximately $290 million of incremental capital investment, is expected to allow the Empire Mine to produce at three million tons annually through 2017 and increase Tilden Mine production by more than two million tons annually. Cliffs said its Empire Mine was previously projected to exhaust reserves in early 2011.
As part of the capacity expansion, Cliffs will also mine additional ore from its Tilden Mine, located adjacent to Empire, and process it utilizing extra processing capacity at Empire. Utilization of this capacity will enable Tilden to increase production to more than 10 million tons annually. Tilden Mine currently has an annual rated capacity of nearly eight million tons, with an expected mine life exceeding 30 years.

A trio of professors working with the national Quality Research Center at the University of Michigan finds that offshore outsourcing hurts customer service ratings, but farming out back office operations has a limited impact.
The working paper, conducted by the University of Michigan as well as Nasscom, India’s association of software and services companies, was penned by Jonathan Whitaker from the University of Richmond, M.S. Krishnan and Claes Fornell at the University of Michigan. The three outlined their findings in the Wall Street Journal on Monday, but the full working paper is worth a read.
The big takeaways from the study, which was based on the outsourcing activity of 150 North American firms between 1998 and 2006:

A Butte neurosurgeon is checking himself out of the Mining City.
The wife of Dr. Peter Sorini says the nationally known surgeon plans to give up neurosurgery for the time being to pursue a management position in Michigan.
Stephanie Sorini says it’s a bittersweet decision. She says Peter is seeing life and death at its worst in Iraq, where he’s currently volunteering to treat victims of war.
She adds that his experience overseas, a new career path, and the desire to spend more time with his family led to the decision to join his brother in Ann Arbor, where he’ll help manage a medical company.
Stephanie Sorini added that her husband hasn’t completely shut the door on neurosurgery. He plans to volunteer as a surgeon on overseas missions.
