Major mining operators are excited at new zinc find

LEADING multi-national mining firms are queuing up to get a slice of what could be the country’s biggest zinc find since the Lisheen mine in the early 1990s.

Companies like Xstrata (formerly Noranda), Tech Cominco and Rio Tinto are understood to be among those excited by the new discovery at Quinn, Co Clare, by Irish-owned Belmore Resources.

The find was located close to the 19th century Kilbricken lead mine, in the Monanoe townland, and at the base of a large calcite deposit.

Belmore, run by former Ovoca and Bula director Pat Mahoney, drilled a single hole at the Quinn prospect and encountered a 10-metre mineralisation zone, containing 14pc zinc and 5.5pc lead, at a depth of 450 metres. Silver was also present at a grading of 62.84 grams per tonne. (more…)

Jagdeo said his administration would not recognize the deal because the government, which holds the remaining 30 percent share in Omai Bauxite Mining Incorporated (OBMI), was not consulted.

“These agreements, whatever they are, we are still in the dark, we have broad information as to what the deal is but the details of those would still have to come to us either for approval as a regulator or as a shareholder,” he said. (more…)
