Oil industry braces for rights trial

Fourteen years after the execution of the Nigerian author and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa by Nigeria’s former military regime, Royal Dutch Shell will appear before U.S. District Court in New York to answer charges of crimes against humanity in connection with his death.

The trial, scheduled to begin Wednesday, will examine allegations that Shell sought the aid of the former Nigerian regime in silencing Mr. Saro-Wiwa, a vociferous critic, an addition to paying soldiers who carried out human rights abuses in the oil-rich but impoverished Niger Delta where it operated.

Shell strongly denies the charges. But the trial is the latest in s series of cases aimed at some of the world’s biggest oil companies, asserting misdeeds in developing countries where they were once seen as unassailable. Oil companies are being sued on charges of environmental damage, collusion with repressive governments and contributing to human rights abuses, among others. (more…)

Uranium Mining in South Texas

Here’s something you may not have known, the coastal bend is the third leading producer of uranium in the nation.

A money-maker for the companies involved, but some residents living near those mines claim the mining process contaminates their ground water. Our Manuel De La Rosa has this special report.

The Garcia Hills neighborhood in Ricardo was once the retirement dream for Ann Ewing and her family.

But about a decade ago, her family received a letter from the EPA. They were astounded to read that their ground water was five to eight times above the uranium standard for safe drinking water.

Yankee Hat Makes High Grade Tungsten Discovery; Kidlark Project, Yukon

Yankee Hat Minerals Ltd. is pleased to announce that as a result of the regional joint venture grassroots exploration program with the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (”JOGMEC”) a new property, Kidlark, has been explored. Surface sampling has returned high grade tungsten assay results from this scheelite skarn occurrence.
The Kidlark Property was explored in late July, and company geologists immediately staked 32 claims covering several visually impressive scheelite-bearing garnet skarn tungsten showings. The property, located within the Pelly Mountains, is approximately 90 kilometers northeast of Whitehorse, and 45 km west-northwest of Quiet Lake along the South Canol Highway. It lies less than 20 km northeast of Livingstone, an active placer gold operational area serviced by an active airstrip and winter road access.
Eighteen grab samples were taken from the Kidlark Property and submitted to EcoTech Laboratories in Whitehorse for testing. (more…)

Nuclear split in Alice Springs Labor group

URANIUM caused a split in the Alice Springs branch of the ALP this week.
The branch wrote a public letter expressing “dismay, disgust and opposition” to uranium exploration 25km south of the town.
It cites a risk to the water supply, radioactive pollution of the atmosphere and a lack of consultation.
Long-term ALP member Dr Charlie Carter moved the motion at the branch meeting on Monday and released the letter to the media.
But he admitted the branch was divided, with seven out of 13 voting to protest.
Dr Carter claimed more than seven members were against uranium exploration, but party politics won out.
He said: “It was strongly put that we should follow the party line.”
He said the ALP recently changed its policy to support uranium mining.
He said: “I’ve read the position of the ALP in some depth. (more…)

Former manager gives evidence at Beaconsfield inquest

A former manager of the Beaconsfield Gold Mine has told a coronial inquest the operation would have benefited from more frequent inspections from Tasmania’s workplace safety body.

Matthew Gill was the manager in April 2006 when a rockfall killed miner Larry Knight and trapped two others underground for a fortnight.

Mr Gill has told the inquest at the Launceston Magistrates Court that he had written to invite Workplace Standards to inspect the mine 8 months before the rockfall.

He said “another set of eyes” would have ensured the mine’s safety procedures were adequate.

Mr Gill is the last witness listed to give evidence before the Coroner, Rod Chandler. (more…)
