Inquest told of seismic concerns in gold mine
September 24th, 2008 | by mantrionline |The final witness at the inquest into the death of Beaconsfield miner Larry Knight has told what steps were taken to deal with the risk of earthquakes at the mine.
Matthew Gill was the mine’s manager when a rockfall killed Mr Knight on Anzac Day 2006.
Mr Gill has continued to give evidence this morning under questioning from the mine’s legal councel David Neal SC.
The former manager of the mine has told the inquest of numerous consultants reports that were commissioned in the months leading up to Mr Knight’s death because of concerns about seismic activity.
Mr Gill said March was supposed to be a more hazardous month’s mining than April, and they were working away from the mining area that was causing him greatest concern.
He said he believes all staff were aware of the importance of another major earthquake six months before Mr Knight’s death.
A lawyer representing Mr Knight’s family, Andrew Wernmann has now begun to question Mr Gill.
